Libya’s eastern-based government is advancing into renewable energy with a proposed green hydrogen project projected to produce one million tones annually for international export.
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, under Government-designate leadership, met with global firm H2-Global in Benghazi to discuss the economic feasibility and development roadmap for the initiative, signaling a strategic pivot toward sustainable energy amidst decades of political instability.
The high-level discussions included Minister Awad Al-Badri, the Chairman of the National Electricity Holding Company, and the National Program Committee for Solar Energy Localization, alongside Ahmed Al-Azzam of H2-Global.
According to projections presented, the project could contribute significantly to Libya’s public budget and create over 10,000 jobs, emphasizing both economic and strategic impact. Both sides agreed to move forward with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), setting the stage for practical implementation.
If realized, the green hydrogen initiative would mark a strategic diversification of Libya’s energy portfolio, positioning the country to become a North African hub for clean energy exports.
