NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra to spearhead the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, alongside substantial renewable energy projects in the state.
The primary goal of the MoU between NGEL and the Government of Maharashtra is to catalyze the transition towards green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia and green methanol. With a targeted capacity of up to 1 million tons per annum, this ambitious endeavor aligns with Maharashtra’s Green Investment Plan, signaling a firm commitment to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the collaboration encompasses the development of pump hydro projects with a capacity of 2 GW and renewable energy projects, with or without storage, totaling 5 GW.
Green hydrogen production relies on electrolysis, a process that utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar and wind to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen can then be further processed into green ammonia and methanol, which hold immense potential as clean energy carriers and feedstocks for various industrial applications. Pumped hydro storage complements renewable energy projects by providing grid stability and energy storage capabilities, enhancing the reliability of renewable energy integration into the grid.
The partnership between NGEL and the Government of Maharashtra holds significant implications for the state’s energy security, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
