Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy powerhouse, and Daimler Truck Holding, a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The primary goal is to assess the feasibility of exporting liquid green hydrogen from Abu Dhabi to Europe by 2030.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi expressed the company’s ambition to be a key player in global green hydrogen development. He highlighted transportation as a strategic market for green hydrogen and emphasized the potential for a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions in European road freight transport through this agreement. Al Ramahi underscored the alignment of this initiative with the UAE’s goal to lead the low-carbon hydrogen market by 2031.

Martin Daum, Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO of Daimler Truck, outlined the company’s commitment to sustainable transportation. The initiative with Masdar is a crucial step toward making green energy globally accessible, especially for commercial vehicles. Daum emphasized the importance of enabling the supply of liquid green hydrogen in Europe, marking an initial move to decarbonize transportation.

The UAE aims to establish itself as a reliable producer and supplier of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031. This collaboration between Masdar and Daimler Truck positions the UAE at the forefront of green hydrogen production and export.

As a global leader in renewable energy, Masdar has a robust track record, having developed projects in over 40 countries with a total electricity generation capacity exceeding 20GW. With investments surpassing $30 billion and plans to reach 100GW by 2030, Masdar is driving the development and deployment of renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies.

Daimler Truck, committed to the Paris Climate Agreement, is striving to make its entire range of trucks and buses CO2-neutral in driving operation across core markets (Europe, U.S., Japan) by 2039. Embracing a dual-track strategy with both hydrogen- and battery-powered vehicles, the company recently demonstrated the feasibility of using liquid hydrogen in road transportation with its prototype Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck. A remarkable 1,047-kilometer trip across Germany on a single fill of liquid hydrogen under real-life conditions showcased the potential of this technology.

This collaboration between Masdar and Daimler Truck exemplifies the global efforts to revolutionize transportation, reduce carbon emissions, and facilitate the international trade of green hydrogen. As both entities embark on this ambitious journey, the outcomes could significantly influence the future landscape of sustainable energy and transport.
