Meralco PowerGen Corporation, a subsidiary of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), is setting up a new power plant in Singapore.
The project will be run by PacificLight Power, which is owned by Meralco PowerGen and another partner. It involves the construction of a 600-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine power plant. This facility is notable because it is designed to be hydrogen-ready, meaning it can eventually use hydrogen as a fuel source, allowing for cleaner energy production in the future.
The move to make the plant hydrogen-ready is part of a broader strategy to transition towards cleaner energy solutions. Hydrogen is considered a promising alternative because it emits only water when used as a fuel, thus reducing the greenhouse gases associated with traditional fossil fuels. The capacity to convert to hydrogen helps future-proof the plant, aligning it with global trends towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.
This project represents a strategic expansion for Meralco into international markets. By partnering with local entities and investing in innovative technologies, the company seeks to expand its footprint beyond the Philippines. The hydrogen-ready plant not only enhances Meralco’s portfolio but also demonstrates its commitment to clean energy and international collaboration.
