Meridian has decided to proceed to the development stage of the proposed Southern Green Hydrogen (SGH) project in New Zealand with Woodside as the preferred partner, with the cooperation of Ngāi  Tahu.

The development phase will be followed by a final investment choice. The planned facility seeks to use electrolysis powered by renewable energy to manufacture 500,000 tonnes of ammonia annually. Parallel to the commercial building design for the project, technical development on the facility is ongoing.

In order to establish a top-notch partnership that includes the entire hydrogen and ammonia supply chain, Mitsui is also in talks to join the project and explore the potential market for ammonia offtake. Meridian, Woodside, and Mitsui will work to begin front-end engineering design for the project, pending the completion of commercial agreements.

Woodside was chosen after a competitive process in which Murihiku Regeneration—representing both Ngāi Tahu and the neighborhood rūnanga of Murihiku—played a key role. Meridian, Woodside, and Mitsui will actively collaborate with Ngāi Tahu and the neighborhood Rūnanga in the future to make sure the project complies with their energy vision for the area and upholds their mana whenua ideals.

We’ll evaluate the possibilities for supplying hydrogen and ammonia to the domestic market as well as the prospects for exporting ammonia to Asia and Europe.
