Symbio, Michelin and Faurecia’s hydrogen joint venture, announced an agreement with Germany’s Schaeffler to create a joint venture dedicated to the production of bipolar plates, a key component of membrane fuel cells.

The joint venture will be based in Haguenau, Alsace, where it will commission a first plant in 2024. This plant is expected to reach a production of 50 million wafers per year and employ more than 120 people by 2030. Symbio and Schaeffler will be its only customers.

Equally owned by automotive suppliers Michelin and Faurecia, Symbio aims to have a production capacity of 200,000 hydrogen fuel cells by 2030 and hopes to achieve sales of around €1.5 billion by then.
