The creation of a clean hydrogen and ammonia value chain obtained from renewable energy sources in southern Thailand is the subject of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Mitsubishi Company, and Chiyoda Corporation.
Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, introduced the idea of AZEC in January 2022 as a means of enticing Asian nations to cooperate and advance the decarbonization of their economies.
In order to meet the country’s decarbonization goals, the MoU mandates cooperation between MOL, Mitsubishi Thailand, and Chiyoda and EGAT, Thailand’s state-owned power generation firm.
In order to produce, store, transport, and use clean hydrogen and ammonia obtained from renewable energy sources in southern Thailand and supply them to domestic and worldwide markets, the companies will jointly research how to set up a number of supply chains.
In accordance with the Agreement, MOL and its partners will research effective and safe ways to transport hydrogen and ammonia, largely using MOL’s expertise and experience in these areas.
By moving further with the study in collaboration with the partners, MOL will also contribute to the growth of the clean energy sector in Thailand and activities on carbon neutrality around the world.
MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1 was previously established by the company in order to encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the group and from society at large through a concerted group-wide effort and to support the creation of a supply chain for clean energy resources like ammonia and hydrogen.
By 2035, MOL intends to deploy approximately 110 oceangoing ships with net zero emissions, including Wind Hunter, a hydrogen-producing ship with several stiff sails.
