Samskip and Cochin Shipyard cut steel for hydrogen-powered shortsea containership

A steel-cutting ceremony for a next-generation, hydrogen-powered shortsea containership was held by Samskip and Cochin Shipyard.

As said, the ceremony officially kicks off building of the Samskip SeaShuttle, a next-generation, zero-emission short-sea cargo vessel.

In March 2023, Samskip made an order at Cochin for two green hydrogen-powered boxships. Samskip claims that the ship will be the first short-sea cargo ship in the world to run entirely on green hydrogen.

Hydrogen ship docks in Fort Lauderdale in Florida

The hydrogen ship recently docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is a 100-foot zero-emission catamaran that runs on renewable energy, including hydrogen created on board.
As the Energy Observer is ready to finish the last portion of its circumnavigation, it is berthed in Florida.

In 2020, the hydrogen ship set out on its current round-the-world voyage without the use of fossil fuels. It is said to have sailed 63,040 nautical miles without using fossil fuels since it first set sail in 2017.

SSE and Equinor ditch hydrogen production in fourth phase of Dogger Bank OWF

SSE and Equinor will focus on offshore wind farm power generation in the fourth phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm project in the UK, instead of producing green hydrogen. This follows the confirmation of an East Riding of Yorkshire onshore grid connection.

The up to 2 GW phase of the world’s largest offshore wind farm will connect to Birkhill Wood, a projected 400 kV substation in East Riding of Yorkshire as part of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade.

The project’s developers are selecting sites for cable corridors and other onshore infrastructure related to Birkhill Wood’s grid connection.

Developers stated the local community will be consulted later this year on the connectivity possibilities.

Fusion Fuel to promote hydrogen economy in Portugal’s Alentejo region

A €1 million grant to Fusion Fuel to promote the growth of a hydrogen economy in Portugal’s Alentejo region has been approved.

Fusion Fuel will receive support from the European Innovation Fund’s Horizon Europe Program as a member of the H2tALENT consortium.

It is anticipated that the Alentejo Hydrogen Valley will generate more than 1,200 metric tons of green hydrogen annually, which will be utilized by various users in the industrial Sines ecosystem. A strategic multi-modal center for integration into the larger European economy will be represented by the deep-water port.

Massive fuel cell propulsion tested by Universal Hydrogen

A clean engine for an aircraft has been designed and tested by the US business Universal Hydrogen. In a few years, it ought to be prepared for series production.

With a megawatt output, the electric drive train powers a propeller. It receives power from a fuel cell. It runs on hydrogen in liquid form. As opposed to hydrogen that is pressure-stored in gaseous form, this allows for smaller tank weights and volumes.
