Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment in Finland has allocated an energy investment aid of EUR 1.96 million to Neste. The funding is earmarked for the implementation of a visionary green hydrogen production project at the Porvoo refinery.

This initiative aligns with Finland’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, achieving carbon neutrality, and promoting the transition to renewable energy sources.

The core objective of the project, currently in the basic engineering phase, is to establish a cutting-edge 120MW electrolyzer at the Porvoo refinery. This electrolyzer will be dedicated to the production of green hydrogen, a crucial component for various refinery processes. Beyond its primary role in hydrogen production, the project incorporates a forward-thinking approach to sustainability by capturing and utilizing the heat generated during the electrolysis process.

The cornerstone of this ambitious endeavor is the utilization of advanced electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen. Electrolysis involves the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar power. This process ensures that the hydrogen generated is entirely free from carbon emissions, marking a crucial step towards decarbonizing industrial processes.
