With a test project for gas delivery that contains nearly a third hydrogen, distribution network operator Netze BW will reach a crucial phase in the coming weeks.

In July, Hringen (Hohenlohekreis) will split and provide a portion of its natural gas network on its own. The EnBW subsidiary claims that the amount of hydrogen in this “island” is steadily rising to up to 30%. According to project manager Heike Grüner of the German Press Agency, there are about 30 houses engaged.

The “Hydrogen Island Hringen” project by Netze BW aims to demonstrate that up to 30% hydrogen may currently be injected into the natural gas network without requiring major modifications to the current infrastructure. Particularly when it is produced using renewable energy sources, hydrogen is seen as a climate-friendly substitute for natural gas. But the technology isn’t yet developed enough to be applied widely.
