New York Commits $10 Million to Clean Hydrogen Research and Development

New York State is taking a significant step towards reducing fossil fuel usage and advancing its clean energy goals with a newly announced $10 million solicitation for clean hydrogen research, development, and demonstration projects.

The initiative aims to foster the production of clean hydrogen and its integration with renewable energy sources, such as offshore wind. By funding innovative projects, New York is striving to tackle the challenge of decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors and driving the transition to a sustainable, low-emission future.

The solicitation aligns with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which sets ambitious targets to reduce emissions by 85% by 2050 and achieve 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040. By investing in clean hydrogen, New York is demonstrating its commitment to exploring all available technologies and pathways to achieve a comprehensive transition to clean energy.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the solicitation on May 24, emphasizing the state’s dedication to collaborating with leading innovators and problem-solvers. The initiative will be administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). It will work in conjunction with the Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (NE Hub) effort, which focuses on deploying clean hydrogen across the broader Northeast region.

The $10 million funding will support research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) efforts that are most relevant and critical to advancing a clean hydrogen economy in New York. The projects eligible for funding cover a range of areas, including the decarbonization of industrial process heat through hydrogen applications, green hydrogen production and integration with renewable energy sources like solar and offshore wind, mitigation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in hydrogen combustion, and the development of hydrogen storage technologies.

It is important to note that successful awards under this initiative will be contingent upon securing federal funding. By encouraging entities actively applying for federal clean hydrogen funding opportunities to participate, New York aims to maximize the impact and reach of the projects selected.
