A cooperation between Nikola Corporation and PGT Trucking has been launched to improve electric drive heavy-duty transport technology.

An LOI is being prepared to lease 100 Nikola Tre heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) following the successful conclusion of a Nikola Tre FCEV demonstration program on conditions that will be agreed upon by the parties involved in this partnership. The Nikola Tre FCEV, as well as planned maintenance and hydrogen fuelling solutions, will be included in the leasing order.

Production at Nikola’s Coolidge, Arizona manufacturing site is scheduled to begin in 2023, at which point deliveries of FCEVs to PGT are expected to begin.

PGT has chosen to work with Nikola in order to advance and embrace fuel cell electric vehicle technology, which Nikola President, Energy and Commercial Pablo Koziner expressed his excitement over. “PGT is a widely regarded leader in the flatbed transportation business, with a long history of success built on safety, dependability, and excellent customer service standards. While offering excellent value to consumers, we think that our FCEVs will assist PGT in achieving their goals of continually improving driver experience while simultaneously reducing carbon footprint and increasing the efficiency of their operations. With its combination of purpose-built cars, energy solutions, and the sales and service network necessary to serve customers, Nikola continues to make significant strides toward accelerating the adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).”

The Nikola Tre FCEV cabover, which is intended for longer or continuous metro-regional applications, is expected to have a range of up to 500 miles. It will be an innovative addition to PGT’s freight hauling fleet, which serves the steel, building materials, machinery, oil & gas, raw materials, aluminum, and automotive industries, among others.

The President of PGT Trucking, Gregg Troian, stated, “For 40 years, PGT Trucking has focused on innovating and improving our core competency via technological innovation.” “It is relationships with companies that are forward-thinking and smart, such as the one we have with Nikola, that allow us to nurture transportation advances. As a result of this relationship, we will be able provide progressive mobility options to our clients while also aligning with corporate-driven sustainability objectives and lowering their carbon footprint through the use of new energy sources. Using sustainable freight transportation would enhance safety, lower costs, reduce CO2 emissions, and increase the economic efficiency of the transportation system overall. PGT is pleased to collaborate with Nikola as we continue to develop our fleet with an eye toward the future of flatbed transportation.”
