The establishment of NLHydrogen, a trade association for the hydrogen industry in the Netherlands, is expected to provide a significant boost to the development of the hydrogen economy.

Representing companies involved in various aspects of the hydrogen value chain, NLHydrogen aims to connect and collaborate with stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technologies and solutions.

NLHydrogen brings together key players engaged in the import, production, transportation, use, and storage of hydrogen. Members of the trade association include companies such as Air Liquide, Eneco, Engie, Vattenfall, Fountain Fuel, BP, and Shell. By uniting these industry leaders, NLHydrogen aims to amplify its influence and enhance its ability to drive meaningful impact in discussions with both the government and other companies.

The launch of NLHydrogen marks a significant step forward for the hydrogen sector in the Netherlands. Director Alice Krekt, who previously served as the director of the climate program at Deltalinqs, a Rotterdam-based organization focused on the energy transition in the port area, believes that the trade association will play a crucial role in shaping the future of hydrogen in the country.

During the unveiling of NLHydrogen, Climate Minister Rob Jetten emphasized the importance of the association in driving investment decisions. Krekt envisions a future where NLHydrogen’s efforts lead to an increased number of hydrogen filling stations and the deployment of electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen. These advancements would support the decarbonization of transportation and industry, contributing to the overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The establishment of NLHydrogen is particularly timely as the Netherlands aims to accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy. Hydrogen is considered a crucial element of the energy transition, offering opportunities for carbon-free fuel, energy storage, and sector coupling. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among its members, NLHydrogen intends to drive innovation, market growth, and policy development in the hydrogen sector.

The trade association is expected to have a positive impact not only on the hydrogen industry but also on the broader economy. As hydrogen becomes increasingly integrated into various sectors, such as transportation, industry, and power generation, the development of a robust hydrogen economy will stimulate job creation and economic growth.

NLHydrogen’s ambitious goals and collective approach position the Netherlands as a frontrunner in the global hydrogen landscape. By leveraging the expertise and resources of its members, the association is poised to contribute significantly to the realization of a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
