Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital and RES Partner to Produce SAF in Sweden

Norsk e-Fuel, in collaboration with Prime Capital and RES, has embarked on a significant venture to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in North Sweden.

The planned Project Alby aims to produce a substantial 80,000 tons of e-Fuel annually in Ånge, a municipality strategically located 370 kilometers north of Stockholm. This initiative marks Norsk e-Fuel’s expansion into Sweden, joining its existing projects in Norway and Finland, and represents a critical development in sustainable fuel technology within the Nordic region.

The strategic choice of Ånge not only provides a geographically advantageous position but also leverages the area’s low electricity prices driven by abundant renewable energy resources. This factor is crucial, as one of the prominent challenges in SAF production is the cost-associated energy requirements. The low-cost renewable electricity offers a potentially effective solution, promising economic viability for the long-term production of e-Fuel.

The Power-to-Liquid process lies at the core of Project Alby, a sophisticated methodology that involves converting water to hydrogen and subsequently combining it with captured carbon dioxide to produce e-Kerosene. This process addresses two major aviation challenges: the reduction of carbon emissions and the creation of a sustainable fuel alternative to conventional fossil-based aviation fuels. While promising, the feasibility and scalability of the Power-to-Liquid process have yet to be demonstrated on the planned commercial scale.

Prime Capital, with its extensive expertise in renewable energy infrastructure, is instrumental in advancing Project Alby. The collaboration with Norsk e-Fuel’s cutting-edge e-fuel solutions and RES’s formidable capacities in project delivery culminates in a robust partnership aimed at bolstering SAF production. Jens Walzner, managing director of Prime Capital, emphasized the partnership’s role in reducing aviation emissions—a potential boon to Europe’s efforts in actualizing stringent carbon neutrality targets within its aviation sector.

Meanwhile, the 14-hectare site in Ånge not only provides the necessary scale for e-fuel production but also offers synergies with industrial partners already entrenched in renewable industries. This potential positions Ånge as a burgeoning green hydrogen-driven industrial cluster within Europe, potentially accelerating the region’s transition to sustainable energy practices.
