North Sea Port, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Port of Ostend have achieved recognition as a ‘Hydrogen Valley’ at the European level.

This prestigious status is granted to a geographical area that encompasses the complete hydrogen value chain, from production to distribution, storage, and end-use in various sectors. With their unique combination of industrial clusters, energy hub functions, and offshore renewable energy production, these three ports are well-positioned to lead the way in the hydrogen economy. Additionally, their strategic geographical location as gateways to European networks of waterways, railways, pipelines, and road connections further strengthens their potential as key players in the European hydrogen market.

The focus in the region is on the production of green and low-carbon hydrogen and its derived molecules. These projects not only aim to decarbonize the local chemical industry but also target steel production, shipping, road transport, and other sectors. Initial demonstrations of these applications have already been successful, showcasing the feasibility and potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source. Looking ahead, the local production of hydrogen will be complemented by large-scale international import and transit of low-carbon molecules, enabling the supply of clean hydrogen to customers both locally and in the surrounding areas through the European Hydrogen Backbone.

The European Union recognizes Hydrogen Valleys as powerful examples of how the hydrogen economy can thrive at the local level. These localized hydrogen economies can eventually be interconnected to form a continental network, enabling the seamless exchange of hydrogen resources. Ports play a crucial role in this vision, as it is estimated that by 2050, up to 42% of the total hydrogen demand in the EU could be concentrated in port areas.

The certification of the ‘Hydrogen Valley’ status was issued by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and Mission Innovation, which maintain an online map featuring the main characteristics of Hydrogen Valleys across Europe and the world. The Flemish Hydrogen Ports Valley, coordinated by knowledge and collaboration platform WaterstofNet, serves as the coordinating entity for the Hydrogen Industry Cluster, of which all the ports involved are members.

The recognition of North Sea Port, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Port of Ostend as ‘Hydrogen Valleys’ highlights their commitment to sustainable and decarbonized energy solutions. By fostering the development of hydrogen infrastructure, promoting local and international collaboration, and leveraging their unique industrial capabilities, these ports are poised to make a significant impact on the European hydrogen economy. As the demand for clean energy continues to grow, the ‘Hydrogen Valley’ status positions these ports as key players in the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.
