NuScale Power Corporation has recently garnered approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its enhanced 250 MWt (77 MWe) NuScale Power Modules.
This development potentially propels ENTRA1 Energy, NuScale’s partner for commercialization, to deliver a significant American SMR power solution earlier than other competitors in the sector. The exclusive rights for commercializing NuScale’s SMRs held by ENTRA1 Energy facilitate the deployment, distribution, and commercialization of this advanced nuclear technology under the ENTRA1 Energy Plants brand.
The approval of the uprated design by the NRC increases the module’s power output from the previously authorized 50 MWe framework. This transformation allows ENTRA1 Energy Plants to serve a diverse array of customers with assured, carbon-neutral energy solutions. Notably, NuScale continues to be the sole company with NRC-approved SMR technology, aligning with a targeted deployment timeline starting in 2030.
The acceptance of the 77 MWe design follows years of collaborative work with the NRC, representing a crucial leap forward in the realm of clean, reliable, and secure energy provision. This approval is a prominent testament to the progress within the SMR sector, aligning with global demands for sustainable energy amid mounting pressures of climate change.
Historically, NuScale’s journey with the NRC began with the acceptance of their first Design Certification Application for their initial 160 MWt (50 MWe) SMR design. This continuous evolution underscores NuScale’s dedication to advancing nuclear technology through enhanced safety standards and efficiency, reflecting a broader industry trend towards innovation in modular nuclear power solutions.
