Oman is setting its sights on becoming a global leader in the hydrogen economy, embarking on an ambitious plan to invest over $30 billion in green hydrogen projects.

The Minister of Energy and Minerals, Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, outlined Oman’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 through a comprehensive national plan. Central to this vision is the rapid expansion of clean energy, the advancement of green projects, and the production of green hydrogen.

The energy sector is recognized as a key player in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the risks of climate change. Oman aims to accomplish this through a substantial increase in the utilization of renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind power. These clean energy sources are expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and enhance overall energy efficiency.

One pivotal aspect of Oman’s strategy is enhancing the efficiency of buildings and vehicles, ultimately reducing energy consumption and curbing fuel consumption-related emissions. This endeavor will facilitate a gradual shift towards green mobility, promoting the adoption of electric cars and other sustainable transportation solutions.

Crucially, Oman’s pursuit of green hydrogen production projects is at the heart of its mission to achieve carbon neutrality. The nation is determined to be among the world’s largest hydrogen producers by 2030, reflecting a commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions.

Oman is making substantial progress in the development of green hydrogen initiatives, with successful bidding rounds and agreements for green hydrogen production projects in recent months. The Royal directive to establish the Oman Sustainability Centre is a significant milestone, providing continuous monitoring of performance and ensuring the effective implementation of the national plan for carbon neutrality in alignment with “Oman Vision 2040.”

Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, emphasized Oman’s dedication to meeting international obligations and requirements, particularly those outlined in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The nation’s comprehensive approach includes initiatives and projects aimed at reducing emissions and promoting environmental conservation, biodiversity rehabilitation, and the development of a green and circular economy.

Oman’s national team for carbon neutrality is working closely with the energy, transportation, and industrial sectors to identify critical projects, initiatives, and procedures that will facilitate emissions reduction, a commitment that extends to 2030 and beyond.

The Sultanate is actively preparing an environmental performance report, to be submitted to the UN Secretariat in November. This report will showcase Oman’s commendable efforts in reducing emissions, climate adaptation, biodiversity enhancement, and the advancement of the green and circular economy.

Furthermore, Oman is poised to submit the third update of the report on its specific contributions to emissions reduction to the International Organization for Climate Affairs by the end of October. This report underscores Oman’s adherence to the goals outlined in the national strategy for an orderly transition to carbon neutrality.

In a noteworthy development, Oman is gearing up to unveil an environmental investment project in blue carbon, which harnesses nature-based solutions to reduce emissions, focusing on afforestation efforts within the country.

The nation’s readiness to participate in the Cop28 Climate Summit in the United Arab Emirates at the end of November further underscores its commitment to global environmental initiatives. A dedicated steering committee has been formed to highlight Oman’s multifaceted efforts in various environmental domains, culminating in a dedicated pavilion at the summit.

Hungary and Oman are fostering a vital partnership in the green hydrogen sector through a research and development agreement. Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, emphasized that Oman’s pioneering work in green hydrogen makes this collaboration a significant achievement. The agreement establishes Hungary as Oman’s first Central European partner in green hydrogen research and development.
