Ontario is on a determined path towards greener, more sustainable energy solutions, making significant strides in positioning itself as a leader in the growing hydrogen economy.

The government’s commitment to expand the use of hydrogen as a clean, low-carbon alternative fuel is now becoming a reality with the announcement of the first six projects to receive funding through the Hydrogen Innovation Fund.

At a total investment of $7.5 million, this initiative underscores the province’s dedication to fostering innovation and job creation while driving down emissions. Ontario aims to leverage its strengths, particularly its world-class clean, reliable, and affordable electricity system, to lead in the burgeoning hydrogen economy.

The first six recipients of the Hydrogen Innovation Fund represent a diverse range of initiatives, each playing a vital role in advancing the use of hydrogen in various sectors:

Enbridge Gas in Markham: Receives $1,787,480 to develop North America’s inaugural hydrogen-driven combined heat and power facility. This innovation has the potential to blend hydrogen with natural gas to produce energy, offering a cleaner energy source.

Emerald Energy from Waste Inc. in Brampton: Receives $2,990,000 for a cutting-edge facility designed to produce hydrogen from waste. This project will test hydrogen’s suitability for providing electricity grid services and supplying heavy-duty vehicles with hydrogen.

Carlsun Energy Solutions: Receives $1,891,400 to develop an electrolyzer capable of providing electricity grid services and supporting a hydrogen fuelling station in Port Elgin. This project aims to promote hydrogen as a versatile energy source.

Carlsun Energy Solutions: Further supported with $500,000 for projects in Goderich and Seaforth. This initiative explores the feasibility of utilizing off-peak electricity to produce hydrogen for power generation and ammonia for fertilizer, aligning with sustainability goals.

Kinectrics: Receives $250,000 to examine the feasibility of integrating hydrogen production, hydrogen power generation, and a hydrogen fuelling station. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance hydrogen’s role in diverse sectors.

The University of Windsor: Secures $130,000 to research the potential of low-carbon hydrogen generated using wind energy. The focus here is on providing grid services and supporting the greenhouse sector, demonstrating the versatility of hydrogen.

Ontario’s commitment to hydrogen innovation is not just about technology; it’s about fostering a greener, more prosperous future. By 2050, the hydrogen economy is poised to create over 100,000 jobs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 megatons annually. This reduction in GHG emissions is equivalent to about a quarter of Ontario’s 2005 emissions or taking 15 million cars off the road.

The Hydrogen Innovation Fund represents a crucial step in transforming Ontario’s energy landscape. It’s not just about meeting clean energy goals; it’s about redefining the future, one where sustainable energy solutions are at the forefront. Ontario’s investment in green hydrogen showcases a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and a better future for all.
