Pan-united and Surbana Jurong team up to decarbonize heavy vehicle fleet

Pan-United Concrete, a subsidiary of Singapore’s largest concrete and cement provider Pan-United Corporation, and Surbana Jurong, one of the largest Asia-based global urban, infrastructure, and managed services consulting firms, have entered into a Project Development Partnership Agreement to investigate the feasibility of using electric and hydrogen fuel cells to power a fleet of over 1,000 trucks that transport the company’s concrete in Singapore.

The Partnership is consistent with Pan-sustainability United’s goals of offering solely low-carbon concrete by 2030, carbon-neutral concrete products by 2040, and carbon-neutral ready-mix concrete (“RMC”) by 2050.

As part of the Partnership, Surbana Jurong will investigate and evaluate the feasibility of decarbonizing Pan-fleet United’s of diesel-powered concrete mixer vehicles and tipper trucks.

The Partnership intends to accomplish various objectives, the primary one being the development of a technology roadmap based on Pan-strategy United’s and vision for carbon reduction in its trucking fleets, as well as the shortlisting of high-potential technologies. Surbana Jurong will also assist in the development of a business plan that takes technoeconomic feasibility and possible carbon dioxide (“CO2”) reductions into account. Additionally, Surbana Jurong will conduct carbon footprint calculations to ascertain the amount to which carbon emissions will be decreased in Pan-future United’s trucking fleet while establishing a timeline for transitioning to net-zero emissions.

Pan-United has the opportunity to considerably improve the sustainability performance of its delivery fleet by utilizing cleaner energy sources. The company’s conversion of its fleet from diesel engines to electric and hydrogen-powered engines can also help offset possible increases in oil prices, and highlights the company’s commitment to climate action through the use of greener transportation services.

As a vertically integrated concrete company, Pan-United understands the critical nature of minimizing the energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and waste generated by its supply chain. A critical component of the company’s supply chain is its fleet of concrete mixer and delivery tipper trucks, which can make up to 7,000 trips per day throughout Singapore.

This is Surbana Jurong’s second collaboration with Pan-United. Both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2020 with two additional industry leaders, Keppel Data Centres and Chevron, with funding from the National Research Foundation. This alliance sought to collaborate on the exploration, identification, and development of carbon capture technologies, particularly innovative CO2 mitigation methods that turn captured CO2 into useable construction materials.
