Peruvian Minister of Production, Ana María Choquehuanca, has inked a significant agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
The collaboration, sealed through an agreement and a joint declaration, aims to propel circular industrial production and advance the utilization of clean technologies within Peru.
The initiative, embedded within the framework of the second phase of the Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP II) under UNIDO’s stewardship, harbors ambitious goals. It seeks to champion the cause of the circular economy, mitigate the climate impact of industrial activities, and equip industrial parks to navigate the challenges posed by climate change. With funding from the Swiss government’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), amounting to €1.9 million, this project is slated to unfold its transformative impact from January 2024 to December 2028.
Simultaneously, Minister Choquehuanca, on behalf of Peru, endorsed a “Joint Declaration by UNIDO and the Republic of Peru on the establishment of a partnership for development in support of UNIDO’s Global Programme on Hydrogen in Industry.” This strategic pact lays the foundation for streamlined implementation of local green hydrogen initiatives, aiming to facilitate the transition towards cleaner energy sources in the manufacturing industry.
The collaboration empowers UNIDO to collaborate with diverse sectors in Peru, identifying cooperative projects geared towards promoting the utilization of green hydrogen and its technologies in industrial settings, with a specific focus on manufacturing. Peru envisions leveraging hydrogen as a catalyst for decarbonization, aligning with global efforts to usher in a cleaner, more sustainable era.
