In order to collaborate on green hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in Malaysia, state energy giant Petronas and utility company Tenaga Nasional (TNB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan stated, “The time to commence this endeavor is also excellent since the government is slated to release the National Energy Policy 2021-2040 soon that will detail Malaysia’s transition to green energy.”
The government is optimistic that these two energy firms’ collaboration will hasten the rate at which they reduce their emission intensity as they decarbonize, he continued.
The businesses will carry out a collaborative feasibility assessment on the use of CCS systems at TNB power production stations as per the terms of the MoU. In order to deliver greener energy alternatives for Malaysia and international markets, the parties will also investigate producing green hydrogen fuel for power generation and stepping up efforts to jointly construct a green hydrogen ecosystem, according to Petronas.
By 2029, this plan will start by repowering TNB’s decommissioned Sultan Ismail Power Station in Paka, Terengganu with a combined cycle gas turbine equipped with hydrogen-ready technology.
