Pilot Energy provides an update on its recently completed feasibility studies in the Mid West region.
Pilot announced the start of key studies in August 2021 to assess the feasibility and economics of a large-scale clean hydrogen production project utilizing the Company’s existing oil and gas production operations, as well as to recommend a development path.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and renewable energy generation are required for the transition to clean hydrogen production. Pilot is well positioned to contribute to the energy transition by utilizing the world-class CCS and renewable resources of Western Australia’s Mid West region.
The Mid West Blue Hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage study (CCS and Blue H2 Study) focused on the Cliff Head Oil field, the Mid West Renewable Energy Study (Renewables Study), the 8 Rivers Blue Hydrogen Technology Study (8 Rivers Study), and the WA 481P CCS Study (WA 481P CCS Study) were among the Feasibility Studies for the Mid West Integrated Renewable Energy Project.
The 8 Rivers Study and the Renewables Study have both been completed. The first stage of the WA 481P CCS Study has also been completed, providing an assessment of the CO2 storage potential of Pilot’s 100% owned WA-481P exploration permit, as well as estimates of the Contingent and Prospective CO2 storage resource capacity within the permit. The SPE CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SPE SRMS) Guidelines were used to create these estimates.
The CCS and Blue H2 Study, which is evaluating the implementation of a CCS and Blue H2 project centered on the Cliff Head Oil Field, is nearing completion and is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. Through its 50 percent ownership of Triangle Energy (Operations), the Cliff Head Oil Field’s operator, Pilot owns a 21.25 percent stake in the Cliff Head Oil Field. Pilot, APA Group, and Warrego Energy are jointly funding and contributing to this CCS and Blue H2 Feasibility study.
Each of these feasibility studies has confirmed the significant potential for developing a large-scale clean hydrogen production project that integrates carbon capture and storage with renewable energy generation to produce hydrogen and electricity for both domestic and export markets.
