Indonesia marked a historic moment as PT PLN (Persero) unveiled 21 state-of-the-art Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) units strategically positioned across the country. The inauguration, held at the Tanjung Priok Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU), Jakarta, signifies a significant stride towards establishing Indonesia’s first green hydrogen supply chain.

These endeavors, making PLN the Southeast Asian leader in GHP, are designed to accelerate the energy transition, ultimately aiming for net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.

PLN’s strategic initiative seeks to position Indonesia at the forefront of sustainable energy adoption. By inaugurating 21 GHP units, PLN is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering a green hydrogen supply chain, aligning with global efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The ambitious goal of achieving NZE by 2060 underscores the urgency and commitment to combating climate change.

The GHP units, powered by sources from solar power plants (PLTS), epitomize the integration of renewable energy into hydrogen production. The use of renewable energy certificates (REC) from various EBT generators in Indonesia further emphasizes the commitment to environmentally friendly practices. This innovative approach positions PLN as a pioneer in the region, showcasing a blueprint for sustainable hydrogen production.

PLN’s green hydrogen production holds transformative potential in the transportation sector. With 124 tons of green hydrogen earmarked for various needs, including fueling vehicles, PLN aims to drive the transition to low-carbon transport. The envisioned reduction in carbon emissions and the decrease in fuel imports align with broader national goals of energy security and sustainability.

PLN’s commitment extends beyond GHP, encompassing the establishment of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) and fuel cell generators fueled by green hydrogen. This multifaceted approach reflects a holistic vision, emphasizing the practical applications and infrastructure necessary for a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem.
