Plug Power and Lhyfe have established a collaboration to pursue and develop green hydrogen production plants across Europe.

By 2025, the effort aims to create a total of 300MW of hydrogen and to begin construction of a 1GW production facility.

The arrangement expands on the working partnership that the two companies formed earlier this year. Plug Power’s hydrogen electrolyzer technology will contribute 1MW of capacity to the world’s first offshore hydrogen production facility, developed by Lhyfe and powered by electricity generated by a floating wind turbine off the coast of Le Croisic. The facility will be located at SEM-REV, Centrale Nantes’ offshore test site, and will be operational by 2022. Plug Power and Lhyfe executives gathered in Paris, France, today for Hyvolution 2021, where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) detailing their respective roles and duties, as well as their future aspirations.

“We’re thrilled to expand our work with Lhyfe, bringing the green hydrogen revolution throughout Europe,” said Andy Marsh, CEO for Plug Power. “The team at Lhyfe have bold ambitions and capabilities that align with our own vision for a decarbonized future, and ability to scale hydrogen infrastructure quickly. In North America, we’ve already built a robust ‘hydrogen highway,’ which includes 165 hydrogen fueling stations and stationary power for businesses and institutions, a success we plan to replicate in Europe.”

Plug Power is the world’s largest importer of liquid hydrogen and has been operating in Europe for over a decade. The company has made substantial strides in deploying hydrogen applications with major European industrials, logistics companies, and automotive manufacturers, particularly through its HYVIA joint venture with Renault. Plug Power has deployed numerous PEM technology solutions in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal, and recently announced the establishment of its European headquarters in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

“We are very proud of the confidence that a player such as Plug Power has in our determination and ability to produce totally clean hydrogen,” said Matthieu Guesné, CEO and founder of Lhyfe. “Thanks to this partnership, we will be able to rely on Plug Power’s cutting-edge technology to deploy numerous hydrogen production sites onshore and offshore, in Europe but also in North America, which has particularly important decarbonization needs, in particular to replace the fossil fuel products that are still extracted and consumed on a massive scale.”

Lhyfe is the global market leader in industrial-scale generation of renewable green hydrogen. The business launched the world’s first industrial manufacturing site for renewable hydrogen in September, directly connected to a wind farm. It will open the world’s first offshore renewable hydrogen production facility in 2022 at the SEM-REV offshore test site.

Lhyfe is currently launching over 60 projects in Europe, primarily in the mobility and industrial sectors.

As part of the announcement, Plug Power and Lhyfe will explore options to collaborate on the development of green hydrogen generating plants around Europe that are powered by renewable energy and generated using state-of-the-art PEM electrolysis technology. The new project will focus on on- and off-road mobility. Finally, the two parties will discuss collaborating on the development of an offshore wind electrolyzer plant in the United States.
