Plug Power has introduced a portable liquid hydrogen refuelers. Designed to revolutionize fleet refueling for medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, these portable stations are poised to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology across various sectors.

The HL-450D-P, Plug’s flagship portable refueler, represents a paradigm shift in refueling infrastructure. This all-in-one solution offers fleet operators unparalleled flexibility and convenience, with the ability to rapidly deploy hydrogen refueling capabilities at either 350 bar or 700 bar pressure levels. Unlike traditional refueling stations, the HL-450D-P requires minimal site preparation and only a single electrical connection, drastically reducing infrastructure costs and deployment time.

The applications of Plug’s portable refuelers span a wide range of industries, catering to fleet vehicle operators seeking to decarbonize their operations. From mass transit agencies operating buses, trains, and ferries to logistics companies and retail distributors, the demand for sustainable refueling solutions is on the rise. Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, hailed the portable refueler as a game-changer, enabling cost-effective adoption of hydrogen technology in transportation sectors that were previously hard-to-abate.

One of the key advantages of Plug’s portable refueler is its ability to support initial fleet deployments with high-performance fueling solutions at a small scale. By eliminating the need for permanent fueling stations, fleet operators can avoid significant upfront investments and expedite the transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles. Additionally, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) offer compelling advantages over battery electric vehicles (BEVs), including increased payload capacity and significantly reduced refueling times.

The HL-450D-P boasts a robust design, featuring a 1,500-kilogram cryogenic liquid storage tank, pumping and vaporization system, and a J2601-compliant dispenser for seamless refueling of FCEVs. Furthermore, onboard telemetry enables remote monitoring, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Plug’s acquisition of ACT in November 2021 facilitated the development of this innovative solution, which is manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Houston, Texas.

The introduction of portable hydrogen refuelers comes at a critical juncture, with transportation emerging as the highest greenhouse gas-emitting sector in the United States. The urgency to curb carbon emissions has propelled the demand for sustainable transportation solutions, making hydrogen fuel cell technology an increasingly attractive option for fleet operators.

As Plug Power continues to drive innovation in the hydrogen economy, the deployment of portable refuelers marks a significant milestone in the transition towards cleaner, more efficient transportation. With the potential to reshape the future of fleet refueling, Plug’s portable hydrogen stations represent a bold step towards a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
