Plug Power, a global leader in hydrogen solutions, has received a significant order for 100 megawatts (MW) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers.

This milestone project in the European oil and gas sector aims to generate green hydrogen using renewable energy, effectively reducing carbon dioxide emissions and advancing the green hydrogen economy.

Plug Power’s PEM electrolyzers will be powered by 100% renewable energy sources, allowing them to produce approximately 43 tons of green hydrogen per day. By replacing gray hydrogen in the oil refining process, this initiative will eliminate around 516 tons of carbon dioxide emissions daily. The project showcases the potential of green hydrogen to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries and support companies in achieving ambitious carbon reduction targets.

Plug Power provided engineering support throughout the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) study, which played a crucial role in moving the project from planning to execution. The company’s PEM electrolyzers utilize modular design and PEM stack technology, offering a compact footprint with the flexibility for capacity expansion. Moreover, the electrolyzers can dynamically adjust their hydrogen output based on electrical input, enabling efficient integration with intermittent renewable energy resources.

To meet the demand for the project, Plug Power will manufacture the PEM stacks at its state-of-the-art gigafactory in Rochester, New York. With a current capacity of 100 MWs per month, the facility ensures a reliable and efficient supply of electrolyzer stacks. The electrolyzers are scheduled to be delivered and installed in 2024, marking a significant step forward in the deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure in Europe’s oil and gas sector.
