The company is set to construct a “green hydrogen” plant with a total project value of $290 million.
The site chosen for this project is the Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park (STAMP) in the Town of Alabama, Genesee County. This 1,250-acre business park is poised to become a hub for innovation and sustainable industry. Moreover, it’s not just the “green hydrogen” plant that’s in the spotlight; STAMP is a prime contender for housing a $17 billion Samsung semiconductor plant, a development that could create nearly 2,000 job opportunities.
Plug Power has made a commitment to Genesee County, pledging to create 68 jobs with the establishment of this new hydrogen facility. These jobs will extend across various facets of the plant’s operations, including the production of 45 tons of green hydrogen per day. This green hydrogen is intended for use in freight transportation and materials handling equipment – an application with significant potential to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner logistics.
Incentives and Collaborations
To support this endeavor, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office is taking active steps. The project will receive incentives including a 10-megawatt allocation of low-cost power from the Niagara Power Project, a $1.5 million grant from the Western New York Power Proceeds Program, and a significant 143 megawatts of high-load factor power procured for Plug Power through the energy market.
Empire State Development is also contributing to the project’s success, offering up to $2 million in Excelsior Tax Credits in return for meeting specified job-creation targets. Genesee County is poised to provide additional incentives, pending approval from the Genesee County Economic Development Center.
