In the race to find sustainable energy alternatives to fossil fuels, POSCO E&C has emerged as a frontrunner, prioritizing eco-friendly plant technologies utilizing hydrogen and nuclear power.

3As global attention shifts towards clean energy, POSCO E&C strategically positions itself to contribute to the transition.

As part of the POSCO Group’s ambitious goal to produce 7 million tons of hydrogen by 2050, POSCO E&C plans to diversify its hydrogen plant construction projects. With exclusive technology and a proven track record in implementing similar projects, POSCO E&C is well-equipped to design and construct blue and green hydrogen production plants.

The production methods for hydrogen vary, and POSCO E&C has experience in both blue and green hydrogen. Blue hydrogen is produced by reacting natural gas with steam at high temperatures and pressures while capturing and sequestering the resulting carbon emissions through Carbon Capture Utilization Storage (CCUS) processes. Green hydrogen, on the other hand, is derived from water electrolysis using renewable electricity. POSCO E&C has successfully implemented projects involving carbon capture and hydrogen extraction facilities using natural gas, showcasing their expertise in these domains.

By 2026, POSCO E&C aims to produce 400,000 tons of hydrogen annually. To support this goal, the company recognizes the importance of developing facilities for liquefying, transporting, and storing hydrogen and its byproducts, including carbon. Leveraging its extensive experience in implementing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal projects in Korea and abroad, POSCO E&C has established itself as a leader in EPC capacity for liquefied gas storage facilities. Furthermore, the company has been investing in technology development, securing licenses, and expanding its pool of expertise in electrolysis and ammonia hydrogen extraction facilities.

POSCO E&C is actively engaging in joint research initiatives and forging strategic partnerships through memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to expand its presence in the hydrogen energy sector. In September, POSCO Holdings signed an MOU with Approtium, a hydrogen production and marketing company, to collaborate on CSU-based blue hydrogen projects. In line with these efforts, POSCO E&C plans to invest over 200 billion won by 2026 to construct a hydrogen extraction and carbon capture plant with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons.

Recognizing the significance of nuclear power in the energy mix, especially as a complement to renewable energy sources, POSCO E&C has established a dedicated nuclear power business implementation team. Nuclear power has gained recognition as an essential energy resource, particularly in the European Union’s eco-friendly and green classification system called the Taxonomy. POSCO E&C intends to actively participate in projects involving nuclear power facilities, including synchrotron light source facilities.
