PowerCell Group, a Swedish company, has landed a significant deal worth SEK 165 million with a top Italian marine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
The agreement involves delivering 56 Marine System 225 fuel cell units, making it one of the largest marine fuel cell orders ever recorded. These systems are set to be delivered between mid and late 2025 and will mainly be used to supply over 6.3 MW of auxiliary power to internal electrical systems of commercial cruise ships.
Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group, expressed pride in the partnership with the experienced Italian OEM. He highlighted that their fuel cell solution is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces noise pollution from ships. This order is seen as a testament to the growing importance of hydrogen-electric solutions within the maritime industry.
The deal signifies a major step towards decarbonizing the marine industry, with hydrogen fuel cells leading the charge. Besides the major order, PowerCell will also provide an additional 3.2 MW system for internal testing and another system for installation in a separate vessel, boosting their involvement in sustainable maritime power.
