The Italian Hydrogen Association, H2IT, views it as proof of the supply chain’s realism. To expand hydrogen mobility in Italy, it is strategically important to begin building infrastructure.

This is great news for Italy’s sustainable mobility future and a key development in the development of the nation’s hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The ranking of the 36 projects approved for public funding to build hydrogen refueling stations has been released by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. a roughly 103.5 million euro state contribution, made possible by the PNRR. This is the first installment of the 230 million euros in total that the Plan anticipates spending to build the nation’s hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

The strong response from the supply chain, which demonstrates that it is prepared to provide hydrogen solutions to the Italian system, is highlighted by H2IT, the Italian Hydrogen Association, which represents large, medium, and small businesses, research centers, and universities working in the hydrogen sector. The Association also expects that a portion of the investment—roughly 130 million—that was not allocated through this request will nonetheless be spent in the hydrogen mobility industry.

To enable hydrogen to make a significant contribution to attaining the decarbonization goals of the Italian system, a network of filling stations must be developed. Infrastructure investment is crucial from a strategic perspective since it makes hydrogen mobility and its supply chain possible, both of which will benefit from Hydrogen Valleys initiatives. This vector has long been a priority in Europe, where innovative nations like Germany serve as role models for innovation and the energy transition. To close the gap with these nations, we are currently moving in the correct direction. From this perspective, the Ministry’s choice to fund the first 36 projects for businesses engaged in the hydrogen sector is significant. The supply chain is young but highly technological and innovative, and for years it has invested a significant amount of money in hydrogen projects as well as the advancement of skills and technologies, betting on the future of hydrogen mobility in Italy with the planning of these industrial investments.”

There will therefore be 38 hydrogen refueling stations dispersed across the country by 2026. In actuality, the two HRS that now exist in the provinces of Bolzano and Mestre are added to the 36 new HRS that will be constructed. The areas selected primarily relate to critical locations for heavy-duty transportation, such as the Brenner road axis, the Turin-Trieste east-west corridor, and the European TEN-T corridors (trans-European transport networks).

Unsurprisingly, 77% (or around 79 million) of the 103.5 million euros are related to the Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Lombardy, and Piedmont areas in the North. For instance, around 27 million will go toward nine projects in Veneto, over 21 million toward six in Trentino-Alto Adige, and roughly 16 million toward five in Piedmont and one in Lombardy (4). The Center and the South are also receiving investments; for instance, 8 million (3) will go to Puglia, 3 million (2) to Lazio, and 2 million (1) to Calabria.

Regarding the companies involved, Autostrada del Brennero (4 projects), Milano Serravalle (3), Snam 4 Mobility (8), Eni (3), Sapio (2), Green Factory (1), Sasa (2), Edison (3), Q8 Petroleum (3), Alperia Greenpower (1), Gemmo — Simplifhy SB (1), Dilella Invest (1), Beyfin (1), Teca Gas (1), Sol (1), and Italgas (1) presented the approved projects (1).

The initiatives signify a significant beginning for Italy’s hydrogen mobility industry. Future H2IT expects that the national plan will continue to be supported by focused investments. Since its foundation, H2IT has consistently contributed its knowledge of the sector and experience to political decision-makers, working on several occasions with the Ministries. Additionally, it emphasizes how crucial it is to gradually simplify and harmonize the regulatory environment in order to fully unlock the potential of a supply chain that might provide the nation a leading position in the ecological transition economy and generate new jobs.
