Provaris Energy has advanced its Tiwi Island green hydrogen (Tiwi H2) project on the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory by submitting an EPBC referral to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water of the Australian Government.
The second phase of the Tiwi H2 environmental procedure is the EPBC submission to the Federal Government.
The Northern Territory Government’s Environmental Protection Authority had received a referral filing for Tiwi H2 in June, and a decision is expected this month.
The NT Government granted Tiwi H2 major project status in August, a designation given to initiatives with significance and potential regional benefits.
Provaris intends to produce 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually as part of the Tiwi H2 project, which would then be distributed to markets in the Asia Pacific.
The green hydrogen will be produced using solar energy and transported using compressed hydrogen technology exclusive to Provaris.
With a projected 30-year lifespan, the project is anticipated to provide 500 jobs during construction and 100 employment after it is operating.
