French company RH2 is developing hydrogen retrofit kits for heavy goods vehicles and construction machinery. The kits are designed to convert existing diesel engines to run on hydrogen, at a fraction of the cost of replacing the vehicles outright.

RH2’s solution works by injecting hydrogen and water mist directly into the engine cylinder head. This allows the engine to run more efficiently and produce significantly fewer emissions. RH2 claims that its retrofit kits can reduce NOx emissions by up to 95%.

The kits are also relatively easy to install and can be completed in as little as one week by a team of three mechanics. This makes them a viable option for fleet operators who want to reduce their environmental impact without having to invest in new vehicles.

RH2 is currently testing its kits on a variety of heavy vehicles, including trucks, buses, and construction machinery. The company expects to begin commercial production of the kits in 2024.

RH2’s hydrogen retrofit kits have the potential to make hydrogen fuel more accessible and affordable for heavy transport operators. This could help to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable transportation sector.
