BlueSATH floating wind platform in El Abra del Sardinero (Santander, Spain) was installed and commissioned at its final deployment site.

The Spanish engineering company Saitec Offshore Technologies has set off from Astander’s Dock Pontejos to its destination 800 meters off the coast of Cantabria, where it was tied up for its set-up.

The already-laid mooring lines were then retrieved from the seabed, and the hook-up platform was completed in less than 3 hours.

Finally, offshore commissioning has been completed successfully, so that the turbine is able to work.

Testing will take place in real sea environment with the installation of a 1:6 scaled prototype of a 10 MW wind turbine using SATH floating technology, (Swinging Around Twin Hull) an advanced, efficient and cost-effective solution for offshore wind industry which has been validated in several water tank tests since 2014.

Due to its ideal features to carry out the experiments, the location in El Abra del Sardinero has been chosen because it provides scaled conditions that are ideally suited to the BlueSATH platform.

This kind of energy has a very high local content, so it is a lever to generate employment.

“The definitive step to test the technology in real conditions. We are facing a very good opportunity for Spain to once again be a pioneer in renewables.”

David Carrascosa, CTO Saitec Offshore Technologies.

“I am proud that in Cantabria there are people who work in the production of renewables. I wanted to come here today to congratulate them and to show my support on the future of energy.”

Miguel Ángel Revilla, president of Cantabria.

“Cantabria has demonstrated its vocation for specialization. Satisfied and proud of the Cantabrian companies that have participated so this project can become a reality today

Francisco Martín, minister of innovation, industry, transport and commerce of the government of Cantabria

Conclusions of the BlueSATH tests will be extended to the following DemoSATH full scale model (2MW). A project funded by RWE Renewables, which will be deployed in Armintza’s Basque Platform for Marine Energies (BIMEP) in 2021.
