U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, in coordination with Port of Oakland and the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) announced the injection of up to $1.2 billion into California’s hydrogen sector to increase production and usage.

This funding, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is a segment of the budgeted $7 billion for regional hydrogen hubs. During a tour of the Port of Oakland, the lawmakers analyzed the projects that will benefit from the funding. These endeavors aim to generate and use clean hydrogen, boost air quality and green jobs provision.

Padilla expressed that the funding will facilitate achieving California’s climate goals, create green jobs, and invest in the state’s communities. It’s anticipated that a cross-section of leaders from the government, industry, labor unions, and national labs in California can spur the market for clean hydrogen to reduce emissions.

Lee expressed optimism about the fight against climate change and about bringing good jobs to California and reducing pollution. She also revealed excitement at witnessing the benefits that still lay ahead from the clean energy investments.

Angelina Galiteva from ARCHES asserted the Hub’s commitment to working with the ports, commending the leadership of Senator Padilla and Representative Lee. The Port of Oakland’s Executive Director, Danny Wan, also expressed gratitude for the leaders’ support.

In the prior year, these plans received support from Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. Senator Padilla also emphasized successful application of California’s Low-Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) in investing clean hydrogen production for zero-emissions vehicles. Padilla advocated for the implementation of similar programs at national level to cut emissions.chat.completion
