Following the December 2021 memorandum of understanding, Shell Plc is withdrawing from the green hydrogen project in which it had planned to collaborate with BlueScope Steel Ltd.

The energy giant is withdrawing from the New South Wales project following an assessment of proposals.

Shell is withdrawing from the Australian green hydrogen project after completing a comprehensive study and scoping of its activities. The agreement was for the investigation and development of renewable H2 projects located near the steelmaker’s Port Kembla Steelworks in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.

The two businesses had agreed to examine the development and operation of a 10-megawatt pilot electrolyzer. The goal will be to test the usage of renewable H2 in the blast furnace of the BlueScope steel factory. In addition, they hoped to collaborate with other groups to establish an H2 center in the Illawarra region. In addition to H2 and power infrastructure, it would also comprise H2 supply and off-take, as well as renewable energy supply.
