Smoltek Nanotech Holding has announced that the group firm Smoltek Innovation has inked a collaboration agreement with a major multinational producer of electrolyzer materials.

The collaborative agreement comprises the development of PEM electrolyzer demonstrations using Smoltek’s highly efficient nanofiber-based cell material.

A collaboration agreement between the parties stipulates that Smoltek’s carbon nanofibers and corrosion protection will be integrated with other materials from the manufacturer and catalyst particles from a third party to create a laboratory-scale demonstration. This demonstration material will subsequently be included into a complete PEM electrolyzer cell, after which its performance will be tested and measured.

“It is exciting that we and our partner have now signed a collaboration agreement for this development project, and we are both looking forward to developing a complete PEM electrolyzer cell with our patent-protected technology,” says Fabian Wenger, Tech Lead at Smoltek Innovation.

This study is being done to determine the viability of Smoltek’s nanofiber-based cell material and its capacity to reduce the amount of extremely costly catalyst particles in PEM electrolyzers. Carbon nanofiber technology from Smoltek enhances the active surface in contact with the membrane in the electrolyzer cell, hence reducing the overall size of the electrolyzer while maintaining output capacity.

“Together, these properties significantly reduce the production cost for green hydrogen,” says Ellinor Ehrnberg, President of Smoltek Innovation.

The parties have agreed to split equally the costs associated with third-party labor. Other agreement details are not mentioned.
