Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB (“Smoltek”) has developed a high-performance nanofiber-based cell material for PEM-electrolyzers that has the potential to improve the efficiency of fossil-free hydrogen generation.

A development partnership with an industrial manufacturer of materials for electrolyzers began in the autumn of 2021, with the goal of being ready to start manufacturing small-scale prototypes in 2023.

Smoltek stated in the autumn of 2021 that their high-performing nanofiber-based cell material for PEM-electrolyzers has reached proof-of-concept. Simultaneously, the business declared that it will begin development cooperation for the further development of the cell material, which has also occurred.

“Preparatory measures in a development partnership with a significant industrial manufacturer of electrolyzer materials were started at the end of 2021. However, there have been some delays, which means we have yet to sign an agreement or begin the major phase of the project,” explains Ellinor Ehrnberg, President of Smoltek Innovation.

Prior to the continued development of the cell material for PEM-electrolyzers, Smoltek is in talks with additional possible industrial partners. Simultaneously, the R&D team is evaluating various anti-corrosion coatings, improving catalysts, and more.

“The goal is to start a collaboration with a large manufacturer of electrolyzers or components for electrolyzers in 2023, or earlier,” Ellinor Ehrnberg concludes, “where we will build small-scale prototypes together so that Smoltek’s nanofiber-based cell material can eventually be used in future generations.”
