Solarvest Holdings Bhd’s subsidiary, Solarvest Borneo Sdn Bhd, has introduced the Smart Solar PV and Green Hydrogen Testbed in collaboration with the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Huawei Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

This initiative aims to propel the clean energy industry in the Borneo region, marking a significant step towards transforming the state into a major player in the hydrogen economy.

The Testbed, developed and operated by a team of Sarawakian talents trained in CENTEXS Green Energy Lab, showcases an impressive total installed capacity of 425 kilowatt-peak (kWp) with 780 solar panels. This makes it the largest solar system ever deployed in Sarawak, emphasizing the commitment towards harnessing the potential of solar energy.

One of the key features of the Testbed is its integration with battery storage systems, allowing it to operate in a hybrid mode, both connected to and disconnected from the grid. It has the capability to rely solely on the on-site solar system to generate green hydrogen through electrolysis. The produced green hydrogen can then power a 5G telecommunication system through a fuel cell, which converts the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity.

Solarvest Borneo director, Leon Liew Chee Ing, highlights the Testbed’s role as an industry reference for future initiatives in green hydrogen production, aligning with the Sarawak Government’s vision to establish the state as a major player in the hydrogen economy by 2027. The Testbed represents a crucial stepping stone in achieving this goal and positions Sarawak as a potential leader in green energy.

Furthermore, the Sarawak Government’s commitment to becoming a regional green energy powerhouse is outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030. The state aims to have the first large-scale green hydrogen production facility ready for export by 2027. Solarvest Borneo is fully dedicated to supporting the state in realizing this vision and contributing to the region’s sustainable energy transformation.
