As part of its low-carbon goal, Sonatrach intends to start two pilot projects in 2023 that will produce green hydrogen and move it through gas pipelines.

The company has committed nearly $1 billion to the realization of “flared gas recovery projects on production sites and LNG complexes, photovoltaic solar electricity projects to supply production sites, and pilots for the production and transport of green hydrogen” as part of its new strategy in an effort to accelerate and strengthen its contribution to the energy transition.

The group plans to make investments in the creation and delivery of green hydrogen with the long-term goal of meeting the market’s demand in Europe, which has been the primary importer of Algerian natural gas since the start of the Ukraine War, which is what has caused the energy crisis and the move toward green hydrogen. Since then, international oil firms have shifted to this renewable energy without giving up their core business, the use of fossil fuels. Sonatrach is one of these organizations, and it hopes to progressively join the race and ride the global green hydrogen wave.
