With the use of solar photovoltaic panels, lithium-ion batteries, and the PEMFC, GESS can send 230 kWh of electrical power to isolated and inaccessible regions in response to the local and global need for alternative energy solutions.

The firm, which is controlled by Denel South Africa and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH (51% each), is best recognized in the munition and plant engineering industries. It was founded in 2008 when Denel’s Somchem, Swartklip, and Naschem joined the group.

The entire self-sufficient, renewable, decentralized modular energy system is created expressly to be adaptable to client-specific needs.

It can be moved simply between sites, doesn’t require any outside infrastructure, and is reliable enough to work in a variety of environments.

If the green chemical synthesis is preferred over decentralized energy, the units can be configured to produce the most hydrogen.

While the many different system integration tasks and overall system manufacturing will be carried out in Boskop, Potchefstroom, the various different decentralized energy and green chemical production units will be designed in Somerset West, Cape Town.

Although an alkaline electrolyzer produces green hydrogen in the majority of cases, a PEM electrolyzer that uses platinum-group metals can also be employed.
