Sakhumnotho Power has teamed with Keren Energy Investments to conduct a Proof-of-Concept (POC) project to demonstrate the production of green hydrogen at a Namaqua Engineering-supplied site in Vredendal, Western Cape.
While the global hydrogen economy, which aims to produce hydrogen as a future fuel source, is still in its infancy, it is advancing rapidly. As South Africa’s electricity crisis highlights the critical need for reliable, sustainable, and renewable alternatives to the country’s heavy reliance on coal-generated electricity, green hydrogen usage suggests a feasible clean energy option.
In South Africa, where the war for energy generation and availability is still ongoing, green hydrogen may provide a more environmentally friendly, viable alternative in the near future.
A 100kW photovoltaic solar system has been built at the POC project site. This renewable energy will be the primary source of energy for the production of green hydrogen.
The expectation is that the created hydrogen will eventually be used in hydrogen fuel cell automobiles, reducing the reliance on non-renewable carbon fossil fuels that currently dominate the energy industry.
The POC would be one of the first in South Africa to demonstrate the possibility of green hydrogen production using solar energy as the source of energy.
