A Spanish infrastructure company, Redexis, announced a significant milestone for Spain’s energy sector. The Madrid-based firm has started injecting hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources, into the country’s natural gas network through Spain’s first dedicated hydrogen pipeline.
This initiative, launched on September 20, marks the first fully commissioned renewable hydrogen blending project in Europe.
Located in Mallorca, the project aligns with Spain’s decarbonization goals. Redexis aims to demonstrate the practicality of integrating “green” hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, into existing natural gas infrastructure. At the inauguration ceremony, Redexis CEO Fidel López Soria emphasized that this achievement signifies a transformative step in Spain’s energy transition. Soria noted that it sets a pioneering example that can be replicated across Europe, highlighting the broader potential for similar projects.
Margalida Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands’ government, hailed the project as a significant advance in energy transition. She pointed out that the hydrogen pipeline, which will deliver green hydrogen into the natural gas network, is crucial for decarbonizing the islands and combating climate change. Moreover, Prohens sees this initiative as a catalyst for the islands’ reindustrialization, promoting innovation and attracting green investments.
Miguel González Suela, Undersecretary for Ecological Transition, underscored the project’s importance in fostering green hydrogen generation in Spain. He credited the Spanish government’s support framework, valued at 3 billion euros, for creating an attractive environment for investment and innovation. González Suela expressed confidence that Spain could become a leader in the global hydrogen market.
Redexis holds the unique authorization from Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition to install the green hydrogen system. The hydrogen pipeline starts at Camino de las Baterías and connects with the primary San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus transport pipeline. Hydrogen will be available to any natural gas customer in Mallorca connected to this system. The blending process employs a static mixer to ensure a uniform gas composition with minimal turbulence.
