Stadler, a renowned Swiss train manufacturer, is set to fulfill the latest order for three hydrogen-powered trains, marking a pivotal moment in the decarbonization of rail transport.

The acquisition, part of a broader modernization initiative by Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) in collaboration with Stadler, aims to position the region as a leader in innovative and eco-friendly regional transport.

Stadler’s hydrogen-powered trains for FdC are a testament to the evolution of rail transport technology. The vehicles, already in production at Stadler’s headquarters in Bussnang, Switzerland, consist of two passenger cars and a power pack. Crafted from lightweight aluminum to enhance energy efficiency, the power pack houses crucial components such as fuel cells, hydrogen tanks, and other technical equipment.

Each train, approximately 50 meters in length, boasts a passenger-centric design with 89 seats per vehicle and a total capacity of 155 passengers. The trains prioritize accessibility, featuring low-floor access to accommodate individuals with reduced mobility and dedicated spaces for passengers with pushchairs and bicycles. Additionally, the trains are equipped with PRM toilet facilities compliant with Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) standards.

Ernesto Ferraro, CEO of FdC, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration with Stadler, viewing the additional order as a crucial step in the company’s modernization journey. The acquisition of three more hydrogen-powered trains aligns with FdC’s broader strategy to become a modern and sustainable transport company within the next three years. Ferraro highlighted the synergy with the Region of Calabria and relevant Ministries, which have provided essential resources to support FdC’s ambitious industrial plan.

Aristide Vercillo Martino, FdC’s Investment Manager, emphasized the ecological transition underway, with a project to integrate hydrogen as a new fuel for transportation. With a total investment exceeding 400 million euros, FdC aims to position itself as a leader in regional transport, offering innovative and environmentally conscious services to users. The collaboration with Stadler plays a crucial role in accelerating these transformative processes.

Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice President Marketing & Sales at Stadler, expressed pride in FdC’s decision to commission additional hydrogen-powered trains. The collaboration between Stadler and FdC signifies a commitment to decarbonizing rail transport in Italy. The narrow-gauge hydrogen trains, a global first, pave the way for sustainable rail transport on narrow-gauge lines worldwide. Maurizio Oberti, Marketing & Sales Director for Italy, highlighted the achievement, noting that Stadler’s entire product portfolio has gained traction across various Italian regions and operators.

As Stadler and FdC deepen their partnership, the hydrogen-powered trains stand as symbols of progress in the pursuit of greener, more sustainable rail transport. This collaboration not only contributes to the decarbonization of Italy’s railways but also sets a global precedent for the adoption of hydrogen technology in narrow-gauge lines.
