Stargate Hydrogen Solutions OÜ (Stargate) has reached a significant milestone in its pursuit of sustainable energy solutions by signing a grant agreement with the European Commission (EC) under the Horizon Europe program.

The project, coordinated by the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), aims to showcase the complete value chain of green hydrogen production. With funding of €0.7 million, the initiative will demonstrate the utilization of renewable energy from a 6 MW offshore wind facility to generate green hydrogen using a marinized high-efficiency electrolysis unit.

The project will feature the installation of a 1 MW Gateway series electrolyzer, developed by Stargate, at the onshore hydrogen production plant located at the PLOCAN site on Gran Canaria. The produced green hydrogen and oxygen will be utilized at the local hospital complex. Maritime green hydrogen production is still in its early stages, with only a few demonstration projects currently underway in Europe.

Stargate will receive €3 million to cover the delivery and installation of the novel 1 MW electrolyzer system, including Stargate Stellar series stacks, hydrogen/oxygen compression, and storage equipment. This project will position Stargate as a leader in maritime electrolysis technology, paving the way for future onshore and offshore installations.

The consortium for this project consists of various partners, including ESTEYCO, NeoDyne, 2G Solutions, ICoRSA, CMC, SCS, GOBCAN, SPLP, and EMEC as an associated partners. Together, they aim to engage stakeholders and develop replicable models for the wider adoption of green hydrogen, not only in other Canary Islands but also in other maritime locations. This initiative aligns with the Zero Net Emissions 2030 Health Strategy and focuses on strategically important sustainable projects.

The project is scheduled to commence on September 1, 2023, and will run for a period of 5 years. With a total budget of €13 million, €10.7 million will be covered by the EU.
