Statkraft, Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy, has announced its ambitious expansion targets for the German market at the E-world energy & water conference.

The Norwegian energy company aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Germany and support the market ramp-up of green hydrogen. With plans to develop wind and solar parks, operate 2,000 MW of wind and solar plants, and become a leading supplier of green hydrogen, Statkraft is poised to play a key role in Germany’s energy transition. This article explores the goals, technology, potential impact, and challenges surrounding Statkraft’s initiatives.

Statkraft aims to significantly increase the installed capacity of renewable energy in Germany. By 2030, the company plans to develop wind and solar parks with a capacity of 300 to 500 MW per year starting from 2027. This expansion will contribute to Germany’s renewable energy targets and the phase-out of fossil fuels. The goal is to operate an installed capacity of 2,000 MW of wind and solar plants by 2030, in addition to the existing flexible power plant portfolio.

As part of its green energy solutions, Statkraft intends to become a leading supplier of green hydrogen in selected markets. In Germany, the company plans to have at least 250 MW of installed electrolysis capacity operational by 2030. This includes a 10 MW pilot project in Emden, expected to be operational in 2025, with a potential total capacity of up to 200 MW by 2030. Statkraft is exploring other power plant sites in Germany for their green hydrogen production potential. The company aims to leverage existing infrastructure and connect electrolysers to the hydrogen pipeline network for large-scale supply.

Statkraft’s role extends beyond renewable energy production. The company acts as a bridge builder between renewable energy producers and consumers, facilitating power purchase agreements (PPAs) to finance and operate subsidy-free renewable capacity. Statkraft’s expertise in marketing will further support decarbonization efforts by providing green power to green hydrogen producers and optimizing market access for hydrogen.
