In efforts to advance the use of green hydrogen as an energy source, Stellenbosch University (SU) is expected to join forces as a research partner.
During South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent State visit to the UK, the university and Teesside University in England recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The first R12 million has been set aside by SU to build research skills in the area.
The Memorandum of Understanding outlines the research initiatives that will support South Africa’s industrialization using the hydrogen economy and localization of technologies.
The operationalization of the Memorandum of Understanding will result in the localization of hydrogen technology in accordance with the guidelines of South Africa’s Hydrogen Society Roadmap thanks to the resources made available by both the British and South African governments.
During Ramaphosa’s state visit to Britain, the British government has already committed to providing financial assistance in the form of grant financing. The grant money will help South Africa put its hydrogen plans into action.
The two organizations will also work together with organizations in each of their home nations that are involved in the hydrogen industry. In addition to other institutions, Teesside University plans to collaborate with Durham University, while SU plans to do so with the Durban University of Technology, the Cape Peninsular University of Technology, North West University, the Universities of Cape Town, Venda, and the Western Cape, as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
