Revolutionary steps towards carbon neutrality and clean energy production are being taken as Sungrow, a leading inverter and energy storage system supplier, partners with Indian Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the monumental NEOM green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia.

With the goal of producing up to 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen, this pioneering venture is set to integrate up to 4 GW of solar and wind energy by 2026. The Sungrow inverter skid solutions, along with energy storage systems, are set to play a key role in the success of this groundbreaking green hydrogen project.

NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), a joint venture comprising ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, is spearheading the ambitious NEOM green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia. The project aims to harness the immense potential of renewable energy sources by integrating up to 4 GW of solar and wind power. Through this integration, the project envisions producing an astonishing 600 tons of carbon-free hydrogen every day by the year 2026.

Sungrow has emerged as a crucial player in making the NEOM green hydrogen dream a reality. The global inverter and energy storage system solution supplier previously signed a contract with L&T to supply 400 MWh energy storage systems with a DC capacity of 536 MW / 600 MWh for the project. Now, the collaboration extends further, with Sungrow supplying innovative inverter skid solutions for a massive 2.2 GWac PV (photovoltaic) plant as part of the NEOM project.

Sungrow’s inverter skid solutions for the NEOM green hydrogen project are hailed as a groundbreaking innovation, effectively combining the benefits of both central and string inverters. The solutions feature a modular 1+X inverter design, with a single unit providing 1.1 MW, and the flexibility to expand up to 8.8 MW by combining eight units. This modular design enables more adaptability to different block sizes and streamlines on-site operation and maintenance.

Each module of Sungrow’s inverter skid solution is equipped with an independent MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking), enhancing the power generation capacity of the PV plant. Furthermore, the medium-voltage station is integrated with an 8.8 MW capacity 1+X modular inverter tailored for this ambitious project. The solution boasts resilience to harsh conditions, such as sandy, dry, and windy environments, and can operate efficiently in extremely high temperatures. Additionally, intelligent string-level diagnosis enhances power yield, while real-time parallel arc detection further ensures system safety, contributing to a reduction in overall operational costs.

Sungrow’s Senior Vice President, James Wu, expressed enthusiasm for their partnership with L&T in this groundbreaking green hydrogen project.
