In order to work together on the design and development of low- and zero-emission propulsion technology solutions for commercial vehicles in India, including hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, fuel cells, and battery electric vehicle systems, Cummins and Tata Motors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

For those who are unaware, Tata Motors and Cummins have a connection that dates back around three decades. This MoU strengthens their relationship and is in line with India’s aim of “Energy for Sustainable Growth” and achieving net zero carbon emissions by the year 2070. One of the first markets to get Cummins’ hydrogen engines, a crucial technology to promote decarbonization, will be India.

The Cummins B6.7H hydrogen engine is a brand-new engine platform with technology to increase power density, lower friction losses, and improve thermal efficiency. It can produce up to 290 horsepower (216 kW) and 1200 Nm of peak torque. The Cummins fuel-agnostic platform, which benefits from a common base architecture and low-to-zero carbon fuel capabilities, is the source of the B6.7H hydrogen engine.

The fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell engine is a part of Cummins’ zero-emission product line. The fuel cell technology is offered in 135 kW single- and 270 kW dual modules, and it is designed to suit the duty-cycle, performance, and packaging requirements of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and buses.

The move to sustainable mobility is irreversible, and Tata Motors is committed to being among the pioneers of green mobility, according to Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Executive Chairman of Tata Sons and Chairman of Tata Motors, who made the following statement on this occasion. In each of our businesses, we are making firm moves to advance this global megatrend. For this transformation, it is crucial to collaborate with partners who have the same vision, so we are thrilled to continue and grow our long-standing partnership with Cummins for their next-generation hydrogen propulsion systems. We are thrilled to localize cutting-edge hydrogen technology so that we can provide our customers with a wider range of environmentally friendly and future-ready commercial vehicles, hasten the adoption of sustainable mobility in the nation, and help India achieve its “net zero” carbon emission targets.
