TE H2, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, along with VERBUND, Austria’s electricity company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Republic of Tunisia.

The agreement aims to explore the implementation of a large-scale green hydrogen project named “H2 Notos,” which will produce and export green hydrogen to Central Europe through pipelines.

H2 Notos aims to utilize electrolysers powered by extensive onshore wind and solar projects and desalinated seawater to produce green hydrogen. The project’s initial phase targets an annual production of 200,000 tons of green hydrogen, with the potential to scale up to one million tons per year in South Tunisia. The hydrogen produced will be exported to the European market through the “SoutH2 Corridor,” a hydrogen pipeline project connecting North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany, expected to be operational by 2030.

The primary goals of H2 Notos include:

  • Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production: Starting with 200,000 tons per year and potentially expanding to one million tons annually.
  • Sustainable Energy Integration: Utilizing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
European Market Integration: Connecting to the European market via the SoutH2 Corridor pipeline.

TE H2 and VERBUND will oversee the development, financing, construction, and operation of the project, covering everything from green electricity production to green hydrogen generation. Additionally, VERBUND will handle the transportation of hydrogen to Central Europe.
