The Netherlands is making a bold move to accelerate its green hydrogen ambitions. Their Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate has launched a consultation process for a series of incentives targeted specifically at climate technology manufacturers, with a focus on electrolyser factories.

This initiative, offering subsidies of up to €50 million per company, aims to solidify the Netherlands’ position as a major player in the burgeoning green hydrogen market.

The proposed incentive package offers a 15% subsidy on eligible costs for companies establishing electrolyser production facilities or manufacturing key components for green hydrogen projects. These components include electrodes, membranes, compressors, and various supporting systems. Additionally, regions approved for EU regional aid will enjoy an increased subsidy rate of 20%.

Recognizing the crucial role of smaller enterprises in driving innovation, the Dutch government proposes further enhancements to the subsidy scheme. Small companies (defined by specific employee and financial thresholds) could receive a 25% subsidy, while medium-sized enterprises stand to gain a 30% boost. However, a €50 million cap per company ensures responsible allocation of public funds.

The consultation period will conclude on March 3rd, 2024, paving the way for the official launch of the electrolyser and hydrogen equipment subsidy program in the second quarter of this year. This timeline reflects the Netherlands’ urgency in positioning itself at the forefront of the green hydrogen revolution.
